How to Change Pool Cue Weight – Adjusting Cue Weight Bolts

Many modern pool cues allow players to adjust the weight of the cue by changing the weight bolt inside the butt of the cue. This system lets players customize the feel of the cue without replacing the entire cue.

Understanding how cue weight bolts work can help players fine-tune their cue for better balance and comfort.

What Is a Pool Cue Weight Bolt?

A pool cue weight bolt is a metal bolt installed inside the butt of the cue. By changing the bolt, players can increase or decrease the overall weight of the cue.

Most adjustable pool cues allow weight changes of approximately:

  • 18 oz
  • 19 oz
  • 20 oz
  • 21 oz

This makes it possible to customize the cue to match a player's preferred stroke and playing style.

Why Players Adjust Cue Weight

Different players prefer different cue weights depending on their playing style.

  • Lighter cues (18 oz) – better for finesse shots and cue ball control
  • Medium weight (19 oz) – balanced control and power
  • Heavier cues (20–21 oz) – stronger stroke and more power

Many players experiment with several weights before choosing their preferred setup.

Where the Weight Bolt Is Located

The weight bolt is usually located inside the butt of the cue, underneath the rubber bumper.

To access the weight bolt:

  • remove the rubber bumper from the bottom of the cue
  • insert the proper tool or wrench
  • unscrew the weight bolt

Some cues require a hex key (Allen wrench), while others use a specific manufacturer tool.

How to Change the Cue Weight Bolt

Changing the cue weight bolt is usually a simple process.

  1. Remove the rubber bumper from the bottom of the cue.
  2. Insert the correct wrench or tool into the weight bolt.
  3. Turn counter-clockwise to remove the existing bolt.
  4. Insert the new weight bolt.
  5. Tighten the bolt carefully without over-tightening.
  6. Reinstall the rubber bumper.

Always make sure the bolt is properly seated so the cue remains balanced.

Different Types of Weight Bolts

Weight bolt systems vary between cue manufacturers. Different brands may use different:

  • thread sizes
  • bolt lengths
  • hex key sizes
  • weight increments

Because of this, weight bolts from one brand may not always fit another brand of cue.

Common Cue Weight Bolt Sizes

While designs vary by manufacturer, many cues use weight bolts ranging from:

  • 0.5 oz
  • 1 oz
  • 1.5 oz
  • 2 oz

By combining different bolts, players can fine-tune the overall cue weight.

Things to Be Careful About

When adjusting cue weight, keep these points in mind:

  • do not overtighten the bolt
  • use the correct tool size
  • avoid cross-threading
  • keep the threads clean

Improper installation can damage the internal threads of the cue butt.

Do All Pool Cues Have Adjustable Weight?

Not all pool cues allow weight adjustment. Many modern production cues include adjustable weight systems, but some traditional or custom cues have fixed weights.

If your cue does not have a removable bumper or visible bolt, it may not support weight adjustments.
